Snow!

DSC_3043

This year 2011,   is going to go into my memory book as the Year of the Snow..but, I keep hearing this buzz around me..saying “Year of the Rabbit”!!. I would like to defend my stand.

Just into February, and we’ve already had snow more than any year I’ve seen in the past. I haven’t seen the color of the grass. The earth has appeared white since Dec 26th of last year when the first snow storm hit us. Feb and March are supposed to be the peak season, and, we are just stepping into now! It feels like we’ve already been in it for more than a month now.

DSC_3234 DSC_3384

To most people, its very inconvenient..and distressing.  This is perceivable. Its not like they are have a choice of sitting at a window with a cup of coffee and watch the snow, as it falls, so silently, in slow motion, so unlike a hard rain, …making the atmosphere look so beautiful, so picturesque, almost heaven like, like its trying to decorate the earth, the spruces and the cypress, the pines and fir, the houses, the roads, the woods..like one would use confetti on a cake, making everything look so clean and white and bright, (although sometimes, the migraines caused by this glare from the snow..is unbearable!! ).

DSC_3162

Then the plow trucks come and push the snow to the side..along with it, they push the dirt from the ground that makes the snow look dirty. They make sure to push all the snow from the roads into peoples driveways, so that people have something extra to crib about. ( Maybe, the township has taken the burden of making people workout more, during snowy days…lest they put on winter fat! ).

The geese and the deer come along and pour all their dropping, like there was a dearth of poop everywhere, that the earth was being starved of Geese poop. Like that was the only way to color the earth..other than white! It also makes me wonder, now that, all the grass is covered with hard ICE and there isn’t anything much these pesky creatures are able to eat..where do they make all that poop from. Imagine all that bio gas…Go Green!  :-)

DSC_3564

Coming back to the people who find these snowy days hassling.  Its really difficult to be in their shoes.  This working/commuting crowd are unsure..that, if they really take this adventurous drive, how the road conditions will greet them, as they get out of their neighborhood.

Its impossible to get traffic updates, covering each road that one commutes. On the other hand, the municipalities sometimes finds it wieldy, if people stay off roads, Its easy to clear roads this way. Suppose these enthusiasts, did reach work..will they be able  to make it back home?

DSC_3571

Like hubby dear, who decided that he needed to be at work on the day the ice storm was happening. He dauntlessly drove to the train station. The transit on its part..din’t want to disappoint these fearless hearts. It kept ..showing them hope that, the train would be there..in 10 mins...

After another 20 mins, it assured these cold feet..the train is surely going to be there in the next 20mins. After another half hour, it started blaring the signal horns..letting the waiting crowd know, that the train is approaching. Inspite of the frozen lips, (Have you tried talking outside in cold conditions and how did you find your lips? Do they move normally??) they went to the platform in that freezing ice storm..hoping to see those lights approaching but, couldn’t find any train coming closer, for 10 whole minutes.

Luckily, Hubby dear decided to set that nearly frozen part..into action. He started to think and came to a decision that it was time to get back home. There was no way that he will be able to make it to work on this day. He came home to a frozen driveway also known as black ice and somehow got his car to traverse the length of the driveway into the garage without bumping the car into any walls! YEY!! we all screamed silently.  We were hiding in our spots, as he opened the door, so he will find us :-)

All this said..its because of dear Hubby..that its possible for me to be able to sit with a cup of coffee and admire the snow fall as it happens. Its because he toils hard,  we can think of making a snow man on such days rather than think about clearing the snow from the driveway.

Coming back to reality..! Coming back to the working/commuting crowd making their way back home to find that huge piles of snow waiting on their driveway to clear up if they do manage to return in the evening, that is!

Another inconvenience, that homes with both parents working face, is, when the schools declare a holiday, or an early dismissal or delayed opening..they have to worry about arranging for child care or arrange for staying back home.

On their part, schools are unsure if they need to declare the day, a holiday or a delayed opening…or just stay open!  The other day, it was the case of heavy sleet (a very dangerous condition) with rain and snow together. This condition creates slippery roads and walkways. They had a delayed start. This morning, it was the case of heavy snow fall. They had a delayed start. Last week’s was an ice storm. The schools were closed.

The schools have a limited number of snow holidays to declare in a year. If they cross that,  they work extra days in June to make up for the lost days during snow time. (That means, summer vacations are delayed and/or spring break is cut short.)

DSC_3060

The days of delayed start, is a big bother for the kids, too! (Can’t stop complaining, right?  ) The buses tend to come late due to the road conditions, to play it extra safe..And sometimes, they are on time, so, the kids have to be sent outside, well in advance regardless so, they won’t end up running on the sleet to reach the bus. This makes them stay in the sleet longer, getting them wet and cold..in spite of their layers of clothing.  The walkways are narrowed down due to the snow.

As much as we clear the snow from the walkways, the wind, Mr Vayu, puts the snow back so effortlessly, without even needing to turn his pinky.  In the nights, this freezes and cause slippery conditions for the kids, the next morning, who are running to their buses. Salt is of little help because there’s so . much snow that is swept off. Sometimes, the bus doesn’t stop at the spot, that had been dug out from the walkway to the road..then, the kids try to cross the snow to get to the bus..Like, these kids need any extra push to do such things. (As I watch from the window, I see them already digging their hands and legs into the snow piles..trying to see how hard its frozen!)

One day, K’s feet got stuck in the snow, as she tried to cross over to reach the buss, and when she pulled on it..her shoe was left inside the snow and her feet out..she had to tread on it to get her shoe out. She got onto the bus to wear it. A wet feet in snow is not an easy thing to deal with.

All is not bad for everybody, when it snows heavy. There are a few people who thrive in lots of snow. The lawn mowers! This lets them earn extra,  clearing people’s driveways of snow. They usually don’t have work during the winter months.  So, such conditions are good for them, and, for people who hire them..its creates a big hole in the pocket :-(

Snow is a costly affair! If we don’t clear the walkways on time..we get tickets from the police. People from the community have had to take off days from work, to go to court and fight their case and the penalties are hefty, either they had been on vacation or the mail man who complained had been very unreasonable!!

How about people who clear their walkways and driveways themselves! Through sheer hard manual labour! Trust me, this is real hard labour.  Especially, for your back. Its not for the weak spines or weak hearted.

For such people, its a great workout..that is, if you love to clear snow :-) It easily takes much more than 400 calories on an average for a 150 pound person to shovel for less than an hour. That’s a good number.  The other day at the gym, I had set the elliptical to a resistance of 23 and a stride rate of more than 200+ ( I think!!), and I was able to burn me..about 500 calories in 40 mins and but, it was a grueling workout. So, considering this, I think shoveling is a good option. Most times, when Pavan completes clearing the driveway…he comes in, his T-shirt completely wet with sweat.  It feels great to come inside to a hot cup of coffee after shoveling snow. Can you feel that warmth as I hand the mug of coffee into his hands?!

Can’t forget to mention the skiing trips that we’ve already made this year and some more waiting to happen. The kids were on the slopes for the first time, this year and they did so well. By the time we completed the previous trip, they’ve been crowned “The Bunny slope experts”.  They are so eager to get on to the next level now.

DSC_2824 DSC_2826

Hubby and myself went up to the next level of the slopes to gauge if the kids would be able to do it. After the experience of the previous trip we think they must be ready for this in the next trip.  I cannot forget to mention, that skiing or any winter activity is a very very very costly avocation. Shelling out those dollars for the equipment rentals and the costumes is very expensive but, once on the slopes, feels totally worth it.

Last week, was the ground hogs day. Its told that the ground hog wasn’t able to see its shadow this year!  I’m sure it didn’t even come out of its hole because it was the day of the Ice Storm.  All this just means to say that, spring is going to be here, soon! Approximately, another month and a half, maybe, and we can be singing..

“Spring is here , Spring is here, Its the best time of the year!”

A link to my album on snow!!  Enjoy!

Freakonomics to Parenting

The day I completed Chetan Bhagat’s “2 States”, a decade long ice had been broken.  Hubby dear was so pleased. I saw this twinkle in his eyes. He is a voracious reader.  He is not the type who likes to put his hands in many jars like me..but, he sure likes to spend all the time, he can spare, reading.  So, that weekend when, I had finished the book,  he and the kids had taken this big duffle bag to the library. They returned after 2 hours. He had not bought books for himself, they were all for ME!!!

“I gave you this much hope!!” I exclaimed.

He had thought that at last..I will be able to share his passion with him in spite of the handicap we both know, I have..

“no time!”

He had gotten this huge stack of uninteresting books..on the art of writing, and many other topics he thought I would be interested in. I had immediately put those books for recycling. Nevertheless, I had felt like I needed another book to start reading.  So, of all the books from his library, I picked this one..the one, I had already heard lots about from Hubby dear and the world..”Freakonomics”. He had assured me that I would find it very interesting.

“There is a lot of analysis in that book that you would find interesting..and you wouldn’t need to have an analytical mind too! “, he mocked.

Analysis of how people react to incentives.  How the 3 flavors of incentives, economic, social and moral, as a whole, drive people towards different goals, and, lot more conclusions on human behavior collected from numbers lying all around us. He explained how it all boils down to knowing what to measure and how to measure..to make a complicated world, not so complicated.

For example, How can one decide the price on a pint of blood?! If it were set to $5000 a pint, we could have ended up with blood being stolen at knife point and at the same time, if instead of praise,  the donors, were given a small incentive like  $50/pint..how we would have a steep decline in blood donors.

I was at this book for more than a month now, trying to get through as many pages I could everyday. It served as my read, during the nights, when I returned from my workout at 10pm..smelling all fresh, with an alert mind, in need of some food for thought, or, any material that could put me to sleep. The whatever worked mantra! Ready to take on the heaviest or dullest subject on earth to decipher..my mind was up for this challenge, to see, who would triumph..The sleep fairy or my not so thinking mind!!

You see, I don’t have the luxury to claim…

”I think. Therefore, I am!!”

like that famous 17th century thinker (Rene Descartes) had put it..Unfailingly, night after night, the sleep fairy would win.

Now that I completed it..should I feel a little wiser? Maybe, maybe not, I’m not sure!  I know now, I can ask any silly question and that’ll be considered good. Good for the new field called “Freakonomics”. There’ll be data in the world to support an answer for any weird question.

Well, this rogue economist, Steve Levitt,  had founded a new subject called “Freakonomics” based on his silly questions..like

“What’s the relationship between sumo wrestlers and school teacher"?”.

He had even answered it by saying, “Both of them cheat!”.  And there is a pattern to this cheating.  Even when the whole Chicago school system was tested, they could pin point those particular class teachers who had manipulated the test scores of her/his class, who had cheated. They had also found the best teachers. The reason for cheating was because of the incentives the teachers had..for good results of their students just like the sumo wrestlers.

He lets us into the realtors mind, who wouldn’t put that extra effort on the clients home that would fetch maybe another $150 (in net) extra into her pockets vs, the same extra effort that would have gotten her $10000 for her own home.  It was shocking to know that we find more c-sections in areas with lesser child births. Showing that everybody is no less a rogue than a criminal.

One of the most astounding analysis was the reason of the drop in crime rate in the 1990’s being related to the historic Roe Vs Wade case that legalized abortion in the 1970s.  None of the officials in the government (federal or state) could effectively pin point the reason for this to happen, and were busy trying to point it to increased and long sentencing of criminals or increased patrol etc..none of which had any changes to be effective reason.

These unborn children who were aborted by moms mostly would have belonged to unstable families..without any support from the dad..and most of these babies if born, would have grown up to join the criminals. This case almost wiped out a whole generation of would be criminals…the author says!!

But, the conclusion that surprised me the most was this analysis that…it doesn’t matter how much one reads to their child everyday..or if, the child’s mother didn’t work between birth and kindergarten or that  the child attended head start or that the child watches more TV. All these doesn’t affect the child’s scores.

With TV’s and other media brain storming parents and guardians to read more to the child to have a better tomorrow, to inspire in the child, a life time of learning.  How can this make sense?!

Parents who are well educated, successful, and healthy tend to have children who test well in school. But, it doesn’t seem to much matter whether a child is trotted off to museums or spanked or sent to head start or frequently read to, or plopped in front of the TV. the author says.

According to him, all these child rearing techniques don’t matter, its what the parents are that matters. So, it doesn’t matter what we do as a parent, but who we are that has a bearing on the success of a child.   Exactly in the authors words

“An overbearing parent is a lot like a political candidate who believes that money wins the elections – whereas in truth all the money in the world can’t get a candidate elected if the voters don’t like him to start with”

So, even before we pick up the parenting book..most of the things that would matter for the child’s success is already decided. Genetics plays a huge role, he says.

Isn’t this totally against the buzz that is going on in the street today after the “Why Chinese Moms are superior” article published in the Wall Street Journal by Amy Chau?  The Chinese and many Asian parents have been known to produce children with top math scores and music prodigies, with their tough parenting styles. The reason, this Tiger mom says, that her kids were able to excel in math, spelling, music, is because of the tenacious  practice they are made to do, seven days a week, vacations included and they had no choice but, to follow this demand of their parents which includes, no play dates, no sleepovers, not being allowed to take part in school plays and any extracurricular activities, if allowed, would be chosen by the parents.

To her, this harsh parenting style, hard work, persistence, and no patience for excuses is the prescription of success of her children, the best way to equip her children for their future!!

If you all remember, this article, an excerpt from her book, “The Battle Hymns of a Tiger Mom”, is supposed to have generated more than 100000 comments on Facebook, the day it was published.  Amy Chau had sent the whole nation of parents wondering, outraged and defensive, with her ruthless parenting strategy.  Wondering, if they are adequately preparing their children for a global economy, or, they should be outraged at her ruthlessness as a parent.

It has sent the whole nation of journalists trying to size up US and China, be it their economies or the national scores in math and reading. TIME magazine showed statistical data that China has gotten way ahead of where US stands in term of its patents, science and engineering publications, even the scores relating to Math and reading.

Child Psychologists say that ..

  • children who are protected from difficult tasks, grow into emotionally brittle young adults, more vulnerable to anxiety and depression while kids who have earned such mastery..are very optimistic and decisive.
  • Children who are shielded from pain and praised for little or no accomplishments will more likely turn down a challenging task, whereas, kids who are lauded for their hard work, were more eager to take on demanding new exercises.

And neurosciences says..that, “Repetition is how the brain remembers”. This is the key to mastery. Sure the Tiger mom was out to achieve this mastery in her kids..but, at what cost. Should it weigh more than treating your kid like a human first? Isn’t that over parenting, she is doing? Isn’t it also true that

“Smart and happy are inseparable. Pursuing your child’s intellectual success at the expense of his happiness achieves neither”

Shouldn’t this be the goal of parenting? To raise smart kids by fostering them to explore and make them understand the importance of success rather than treating your kids like your performance review or your merit card, as a reflection of your own status. This should not be the goal of parenting!!

If you consider the Finnish Education system…the Finland's school’s scores rank the top most in the world with respect to Reading and Math, yet the kids have the fewest number of class hours compared to the other developed world. Also, their kids are almost 7 years old by the time they start main school. So, should it matter that the harsh parenting styles are necessary to equip our kids for the global economy?!

After reading all these things..and getting myself confused in different ways..I’ve arrived at my conclusion that moderation in parenting is a must too. Over parenting is as bad as under parenting. Even though..I do push my kids to things that I didn’t get access to as a kid..like music, dance and arts..it is important for me that I don’t tax them such that the beauty of this exercise is lost to them.

Spotted a Great Blue Heron!!

Yeah! I thought it was some kind of a sculptor as I passed the pond by my home.

Did somebody put a statue there?

No, Pavan said . I did see it move.

After we came back,  I went back to the pond with my camera…it was still there! trying to catch a fish or turtle. We’ve seen so many turtles that cross the road when it rains so, I’m sure there are many turtles in this pond..Its supposed to swallow its prey as a whole, no wonder turtles are on its edible list of food items.

Look at this gorgeous creature standing almost like a statue..

Wouldn’t you agree with me ..it does appear like a statue.Original_DSC_5691_cropped-2

Everything seemed normal at the pond near my home. The pigeons were busy with picking their food. Couple of them were have a good view of the pond perched up on the fence of the pond. They were enjoying the sunny day DSC_7090

Another joined them.DSC_7096

Looks like it spotted something.DSC_7113

It started to move towards it.DSC_7098

When it came back up..I couldn’t find anything in it mouth.DSC_7109

Back to watching DSC_7104

I just wish I had gone closer…and gotten some close up shots. So. I found the bird again in a few days…This was as close it let me. It didn’t mind the Geese around…DSC_0618

But, Geese thought I’m after them..DSC_0585

With cooler days..Its the time of cosmos too…DSC_0644

Priceless! There’s Visa, MasterCard etc for the rest.

Yesterday, Pavan and myself went out cycling together, we were out almost 3 1/2 hours. This had been a very rare and priceless moment where we were able to spend time together without being bothered by the kids. The kids were at school and Pavan was home and the day was perfect to go out cycling.  As usual, started off with my camera…and there came that poking remark from Pavan.

“What if it falls?” he said

It hurt because I knew he was right.

“Pavan, do you have to say that! I took it along yesterday, we were fine right?!”

“Lets say there’s a 10% probability that you may fall, and if you bring it out 10 times, its surely going to happen, one of those times”.

He was surely right, and I knew it and was hoping that he had not said anything.  Now, I had to put it back, what if I fall and then he would get to say

“I told you so!!”

So, as I went inside disappointed to keep the camera back, I heard him telling me

“After we finish cycling, lets go out for a walk, and that way you can take the camera along.”

So, we set out..we went through bike paths and walkways. DSC_6943

DSC_6920

The wind was heavy at times and it was so fun to drive against the wind up the hilly terrain, without slowing down. I almost felt that burn in my tummy. We went through trails and other ways we hadn’t tried earlier.  Then as we were about 17 miles into the drive, I FELL!!….Pavan was showing me how to leave his hand off the bar and stay like that…I had turned to look at him and driven straight off the road. It was not a bad fall but a fall indeed. I got up and was able to feel better within 3-5 minutes and we set out to complete the 20 mile drive.

As I was completing, I saw something on the road, this tiny thing trying to run away from me and the road..I ran home and ran back with my camera. Pavan followed and here is the thing that I was talking about. It had reached the edge of the road. Look at those polka dots..beautiful color

DSC_6921

DSC_6930

After we left it alone we went on a long walk. The fall colors had already started to set in. I’ve been trying to experiment with the “Bokeh” effect a lot, and here is one I took that has a beautiful color crystals effect…Intentionally took this out of focus to see the bokeh…and I wasn’t displeased.DSC_6948

The look of fall was everywhere..DSC_6992

Almost all the fauna around was busy saving their food for the winter. We found squirrels running around hiding their nuts. Look at this guy looking at us so intently..DSC_6950

Here’s one running with the nut in his mouth DSC_6959

Then he pauses to find a spotDSC_6962

And hides his nut..DSC_6966

We also found Blue Jay’s busy with their nuts..But, what’s with these birds..they just refused to give me a shot of their face…

Here is one charging straight at me holding a nut with its beak..Face not clear!DSC_6967

Then we have another turning towards me holding something with its beak..Face not clear again!!DSC_6972

Then we have another one, perched on a Linden..Not showing its face!! The bark of this Linden …so nice photographic material. Can you spot the blue Jay?

DSC_6979

Here’s another one on the Linden, trying to face away again!!DSC_6982

Now, I need to take this challenge and get a picture of this beautiful looking bird….During my next walk!

Maybe the blue jays didn’t want to show their face to me..but the butterflies were so obliging. As I reached home, I was delighted to find a few of them on my flowers.

DSC_6941

DSC_6650

Can you spot one here, on the Lavender?DSC_6803

This butterfly was so good at camouflage, Not able to spot it on this Lavender right?  The only stops it took was on spots that appeared brown, other than on the Lavender. Never on the grass.DSC_6818

Then we have this monarch..that I had spotted a week ago. Haven’t been able to spot the big ones. I guess, they have left, that fall is here.DSC_6667

I followed this lone guy to the butterfly bushDSC_6687

Gliding by our window.DSC_6673

Then…my gaze fell on one of the beautiful spot of my garden. The Rain Lilies!!! They were in bloom that it had rained yesterday.

DSC_6994

DSC_7009

It was already time for me to go and pick up Richa from School. But, when we returned, me and Richa spent a lot of time in our garden taking so many more beautiful pictures of the flowers in bloom.

This can be picture material for the next blog…..

Interesting Clicks of this week (Part 1)

I had posted a blog earlier about Leafcutter Bees. There I was unable to catch pics of the bees flying away with the leaves. This week I was able to get those pics. Here they are

The Bee has just got the leaf free..bee 1

And is ready to fly away….bee 2

I had also followed this tiny caterpillar from herecaterpillar 1

to here…caterpillar 2

to here… pupa 1

I don’t think I will be here to catch the butterfly when it comes out. But, I am in awe as I look at this pupa. Its so perfect and Mother of Pearl like..

I also was able to catch this butterfly in flight. I appears like a glider… DSC_6020-1

DSC_6029-1

Another example of camouflage..Look at this yucky moth…Now you see it…Moth1

Now you almost don’tMoth 1

Reminds me of a cartoon movie “Open Season”.. Elliot the deer, finds a coffee in the dumpster and gulping it down says…

“Yuck Yuck Yuck Yuck….”

“give me some more…, give me some more…”

gulping it down again  “yuck yuck yuck yuck…”

“Its terrible and yet so wonderful. Like Freedom in a cup”.
